Dutch national team heroes welcome home!

I suppose it is what it is with the American sporting mind. The the “loser” gets nothing, the silver medalist is a stupid loser to ignore. F— the American mass media!  So – it comes to no surprise that the American mass media ignored the State and military heroes’ welcome to thousands of orange-clad fans and their boats in Amsterdam to welcome home the Dutch national football (soccer) team- which was more stunning than the Spanish got in their home-coming.Nederland, je bent een Kampioen! (Netherlands, you are a champion!)As their KLM Boeing 777 approached Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, it got a heroes’ escort by two F-16s of the Dutch Royal Airforce. This was to signal the heroes’ welcome, as there as also a festive, party-like atmosphere at the airport. From there, the Dutch national team was taken by Chinook helicopter to Noordwijk.There was first a visit with Queen Beatrix and coach Bert van Marwijk and captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst were knighted…a well deserved honor!“We haven’t brought the World Cup but you give us the feeling we are world champions” – Giovanni van Bronckhorst.YES – you indeed are…There were an estimated 700,00 Orange supporters packed around streets and canals. And then – there was a boat parade around Amsterdam’s famous canals, with the players drinking beer in an open boat along side the boats of fans. Some tried to swim to the players’ boats – but in the spirit of good fun the police intercepted them. The police appear to have fun with what was a difficult crowd control situation.
